North Central Phoenix around Glendale Avenue is quieter than the Central Avenue corridor and cheaper than the Biltmore, which is most of why people rent here. The blocks off the main avenues are low-rise and residential, and the through-streets carry the restaurants and services.
Glendale Avenue itself is the neighbourhood's high street: Oaxacan, Thai, and soul food within a few blocks, a large grocery, and a public pool at Washington Park. Both I-17 and SR-51 are about a mile and a half away in either direction, so commutes north to Deer Valley or south to downtown are equally workable.
This is a good area to shortlist if you drive to work, want a full-size apartment rather than a studio, and would rather spend the difference on something other than rent.
